The CBC Structure
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya follows the 2-6-3-3-3 structure. This system is learner-centered and designed to progressively develop knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes across levels of education.
- Pre-Primary (2 years): PP1 and PP2 for children aged 4–5. Focus is on foundational learning, life skills, and social development.
- Primary School (6 years): Grades 1–6 for ages 6–11. Emphasis is on literacy, numeracy, environmental activities, and moral development.
- Junior Secondary School (3 years): Grades 7–9. Students explore subjects more deeply, build competencies, and discover their interests and talents.
- Senior Secondary School (3 years): Grades 10–12. Learners choose pathways (STEM, Arts, or Social Sciences) and specialize in areas aligned with their strengths and aspirations.
- Tertiary/University (3 years+): Higher education at colleges, TVET institutions, or universities for professional and academic development.
This progression allows learners to grow at their own pace, with continuous assessment and support throughout their academic journey.
