Motto:Learn and Serve
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is an educational approach designed to equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to succeed in life and work. Launched in Kenya in 2017 by the Ministry of Education, CBC replaced the 8-4-4 system to address its limitations such as exam pressure and neglect of learner diversity.
The CBC model emphasizes learner-centered teaching and active participation through practical, hands-on experiences. Its goal is to nurture every learner’s potential and shift focus from rote memorization to applicable skills and moral grounding.
Key characteristics of CBC include emphasis on values, talent development, digital literacy, community service, and inclusion. Learners progress through different stages based on competencies acquired, not merely time spent in school.
It promotes fairness, equity, creativity, and accountability, ensuring that learners are well-rounded individuals ready to contribute positively to society.
